Kangar, December, 18 - The Women Staff and Wives of Staff Association (PISKANITA) for Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) gave out their aid for asnaf to prepare them for the 2019 school session.

The collaboration of Piskanita and 3rd Force Perlis succeeded to collect RM8,273.85, including RM2,000 from the association’s fund. The collection was used to aid asnaf in buying school supplies for the coming school session.

Puan Siti Rukiah Hj Ikhsan, deputy chairperson of Piskanita said that 55 primary and secondary school students from 22 families were brought to purchase school supplies around the city.

She added that besides the asnaf from Perlis, the aid also reached 29 UniMAP staff in the effort to help the less fortunate staff as well as to ease their burden.

"Each student is provided allocation for a uniform, a pair of shoes, socks, head scarf and a track bottom. Thirteen Piskanita volunteers assisted the asnafs during this shopping session," she said while leading the shopping session.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nasir Haron, a UniMAP staff ,said that he was delighted with Piskanita’s aid as it could ease his burden of preparing for his children’s school supplies.

"Although my child is only in primary school, a lot of school supplies needs to be prepared.

"Thank you to all contributors and Piskanita on their initiative for us, the low-income group," he said when interviewed during the shopping session.

Other than individual contribution, UniMAP's Association of Administrative and Professional Officers (POTENSI), Maxxx IT Global, Api-api Ikan Bakar, Cenfotec and Bebasnap Studio also sponsored the school supplies.

Taiping, 1 December – Some might believe that the elderly who live at old folks' home spend their time only eating and sleeping. In reality they are exposed to various activities including skill-building activities.

This was expressed by Taiping Rumah Seri Kenangan supervisor Ahmad Sukri Abdul Samad who is the Senior Social Welfare Assistant Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (JKM) while briefing 30 Association of Administrative and Professional Officers (POTENSI) from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) during their visit recently.

According to Ahmad Sukri, just like residents of a boarding school, the residents also wake up as early as 6 am to perform the Subuh prayers in congregation before attending the morning sermon and doing some light aerobics.

“After breakfast, they will attend the religious class, cooking workshop, gardening class, and various other classes provided to fill up their time.

“In fact, the annual programmes such as visits to tourist spots are also conducted. In short, the daily routine is filled with various beneficial and interesting activities,” he said. 

POTENSI's “Nature with Kindness” corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme led by POTENSI president, Raja Shah Erman Raja Ariffin also entertained the Rumah Seri Kenangan residents with a karaoke session, P. Ramlee songs guessing game and birthday celebration.

He said that the POTENSI programme also donated beds, pillows and money to the residents to ease their stay there.

“The visit deeply affected the POTENSI club members as they shared gifts with the needy.

Besides aiding the Rumah Seri Kenangan, POTENSI also carried out a CSR programme at the Taiping Zoo by cleaning the zoo grounds while getting to know the flora and fauna there.

Finally, to test their stamina and fitness, the POTENSI members climbed the 1036 metre-tall Bukit Larut, providing a new experience for those who had never climbed the recreational hill before.

KANGAR, 14 Nov - Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Researcher achieved 100 per cent success at the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) 2018 which was held at COEX Convention Center, Seoul, South Korea recently.

UniMAP managed to bring  back three gold, two silver and one bronze medals and two special awards from Taiwan and Poland.

One of the three products that received gold medal is High Strength Geopolymer Reinforced Lead-Free Solder For Aerospace Interconnects Application, invented by Dr. Mohd Arif Anuar Mohd Salleh. This product also received a special award from the Taiwan Inventor Association.

Dr Mohd Arif said the lead-free solder material is a solder material which was reinforced with nano-sized geopolymer ceramic materials.

He added that it is an environmental friendly solder material that was developed to replace lead solder which could harm the environment and human health.

"The produced welding material is capable of producing a very strong connection and can be applied to extreme conditions such as for the telecommunications and aerospace electronics," he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, the second gold medal was for the Fly Ash Lightweight Geopolymer Aggregate (LiGA): Environmental Friendly Insulator Materials for Building Application, invented by Alida Abdullah and team who have also received a special award from The Association of Polish Inventors and Rationalizers.

LiGA is a lightweight building material capable of reducing heat transfer, which is an important feature in providing a comfortable environment where one does not feel too hot or too cold in a building.

While, the third product is a Biometric System For Computer Forensics Investigation: User Authentication System Based on Keystroke Dynamics and Soft Biometrics, invented by Dr. Syed Zulkarnain Syed Idrus Al Saggoff.

All the three researchers are from the Center of Excellence Geopolymer & Green Technology  (CEGeoTech), UniMAP.

UniMAP Vice Chancellor, Datuk Prof. Dr. Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said the success at SIIF 2018 complements UniMAP's achievement for the year of 2018.

"We hope this achievement will be a stimulus for all the researchers to produce more impactful products for the community next year," he said when contacted.

SIIF 2018 is an annual event organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA).

Besides Malaysia and the host South Korean, participants from more than 20 countries also attended this prestigious competition.

KANGAR, 12 December – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and Syarikat Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn. Bhd (Modenas) will market the retro style motorcycles produced by the engineering university.

The motorcycle was named Seri Perlis (SP) and was produced by the UniMAP students and assisted by the engineers from Modenas.

The director of Motorsports Technology Research Unit (MoTECH) UniMAP, Prof Madya Dr. Shahriman Abu Bakar said, Modenas is very helpful in producing the motorcycle.

“We have been working with Modenas since 2014 and it is even more vibrant after the establishment of the UniMAP Research Center - Modenas last year.”

"Through this research center, we are able to train and provide direct exposure to the students and produce the highest possible impact on the industry," he said when contacted recently.

He added that the establishment of the UniMAP Research Center-Modenas will not only reduce the cost of research but would also result in higher technology, in line with the National Automotive Policy to produce high-tech vehicles at low cost.

The motorcycle also attracted the attention of the Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and he agreed to see the motorcyclist himself at the Prime Minister's office in Putrajaya recently, said Dr. Shahriman.

The Education Minister, Dr. Mazlee Malik, Chairman of the UniMAP Board of Directors, Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin and Chief Executive Officer of Modenas, Amirudin Abd Kadir were also present during the event.

Dr. Shahriman also expressed his gratitude to the Road Transport Department (RTD) for providing guidance and assistance in realizing the project.

The motorcycle will be priced at around RM12,000, and will be using the four-stroke single cylinder Modenas engine 173cc SOHC, air-cooled and four-speed transmission.

It produces 14.8 horsepower at 8,000 RPM and 16.2 Nm at 7,500 RPM.

Arau, 6 Dec – 30 students have won seats in the Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Campus Election (PRK), an annual ballot which allows UniMAP students to elect representatives for the 2018/2019 session Student Council (MPP).

Chairman of Student Representative Election Committee (JPPM) Nurhazwani Zabidin, who was also a former president (Yang DiPertua) of the 2016/2017 session UniMAP Student Council (MPP) said that 11 candidates contested in the General Constituency, while 40 other candidates contested in the School Constituency 

"However, there were only 33 seats available to be contested, consisting of seven General seats, 22 School seats, two Diploma seats and two International seats.

"Seven candidates won the General Constituency on the basis of number of votes and will fill the top posts of the UniMAP MPP, session 2018/2019," she told reporters soon after the announcement was made.

He further explained that for the School Constituency, 11 candidates won unopposed to represent their schools of study namely the School of Materials Engineering, the School of Environmental Engineering, the School of Mechatronic Engineering, the School of Bioprocess Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering Technology (FTK) and the Centre for Diploma Studies (PPD).

"Meanwhile, 12 other candidates won after winning the highest votes to represent the School of Computer and Communication Engineering, the School of Microelectronic Engineering, the School of Manufacturing Engineering, the School of Business Innovation and Technopreneurship (PPIPT), the School of Human Development and Technocommunication and the Centre for International Studies.

“However, there were only one candidate sent each by the Schools of Bioprocess Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering and Electrical System Engineering respectively, and JPPM decided there would be no additions to the three empty chairs,” she said.

She added that 9,149 students or 79.27 per cent of 11,541 voters fulfilled their responsibilities through e-voting.

When asked regarding the JPPM, she explained that it is a body established to implement and facilitate the election process, and consists of the MPP, former MPP members, UniMAP Election Commission (SPR) Secretariat and also independent members from among the students.

“The JPPM consists 140 students; 40 JPPM main committee members and 100 polling location officers who have been on duty from November 16 until today, December 5, 2018.

"This year was the first time that the PRK was fully conducted by students in line with the wishes of the Malaysian Education Minister Yang Berhormat Dr. Maszlee Malik who wants to reinvigorate political aspirations on campus," she said.
