Kangar – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is expected to save up to RM 10 million within the next three years because of a strategic collaboration with Strategic Alliance Sdn. Bhd (SASB) to increase its broadband capacity through point to point wireless bridges.

UniMAP Vice Chancellor Dato’ Prof. Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said that the collaboration affords the UniMAP community to enjoy higher speeds of broadband access, up to 200 Mbps compared to 8 Mbps previously.

He said that UniMAP which operates as a Public University (UA) with a distributed campus was previously connected to the internet via a leased line to the national communication service provider.

To be in line with UniMAP's intent to evolve into a superior university, broadband facilities and computer network architecture for the UniMAP community must be upgraded.

“Yet with financial constraints, UniMAP must take a two-pronged initiative to increase the broadband network capacity and also save cost.

“After seeing the results of the first phase of the point to point wireless bridge technology that links the ICT Centre at Kubang Gajah with the Centre for Excellence Advanced Sensor Technology (CEASTech) at Taman Muhibbah, School of Environmental Engineering and School of Bioprocess Engineering, Jejawi, broadband capacity has been increased to 200 Mbps at the same cost,” he said in a statement here today.

Dr. Zul Azhar said this after inspecting the point to point wireless bridge installed at the KWSP Building here to increase bandwidth capacity for the UniMAP community outside of Kangar for phase two via 800 Mbps-capacity antennae.

Also present was Director of UniMAP ICT Centre Nashrudin Mohd. Shukor, UniMAP Registrar Zuber Haji Mohamad, Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Engineering Prof. Ir. Dr. R. Badlishah Ahmad, Dean of PPIPT Associate Prof Dr. Hazry Desa and SASB Managing Director Khairul Nizam Saud.

According to Dr. Zul Azhar, phase two began last June and has been successfully installed from the ICT Centre at Kubang Gajah to the KWSP Building in Kangar, the KWSP Building to the School of Business Innovation and Technopreneurship (PPIPT) Pengkalan Jaya, PPIPT Building to the Institute of Nano Electronic Engineering (INEE) Seriab, and the INEE Building to the Wang Ulu Residential College.

In addition, he said that the phase two installations also established a 450 Mbps link antenna from the KWSP Building to the Bursary Department in Kangar.

“In short, the project is helping UniMAP to convert a leased line-based network between UniMAP buildings in Kangar and Jejawi with a bandwidth of 38 Mbps to a new infrastructure with an increased total bandwidth capacity of 3,650 Mbps.

“This service will be expanded to other areas including the UniMAP permanent campus in the future,” he stated.

Rapid development and fast expansion of technology should not be used as a platform for any individual to display negative thoughts or behaviour, especially to ignite social or racial flame among us.

Instead, if technology and social media are being used well, it can certainly provide plenty of great benefits to the community and at the same time it may enliven again the love and respect that we have for each other.

Those are the main ideas portrayed by Farrah Hanim, during a group presentation in IMT-GT Varsity Carnival, held in Rajamanggala University Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) recently. Farrah Hanim is an undergraduate in Environmental Engineering from University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).

The group managed to beat 4 other groups through its presentation using the hash tag of #Random ActOfKindness and #SharingExperience. According to her, their main presentation was about encouraging random and spontaneous act of kindness among  people.

“We chose a few simple act of kindness and put it forward during our group presentation. The few act of kindness that we have chosen are the gift of smile, compliments, helping others, and good moral values. These are a few of many good values that everyone should portray through social media.”

“At the same time, my group members and I also stressed that, these deeds or acts are supposed to be genuine and not to show-off in social media. It is hoped that these will help to inspire others to do good deeds and act kindly.

Besides Farrah Hanim, the group is also represented by students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Sumatera Utara (USU), Universiti Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), Universiti Medan (Unimed), Rajamanggala University Technology Srivijaya (RUTS), Prince Of Songkhla University (PSU) and Wailalak University (WU).

As for the topic that they have chosen, Farrah admitted that the presetation topic was brought up spontaneosly through an event where she accidently spill some coffee during their group disscussion.

“I was panic, but the reaction of other group members made me feel calm as they offer assistance without any hesitance. This marked a deep impact on me as we are all from a totally different background; which proves that differences don’t matter when you want to do good to others”.
