As with many other universities, UniMAP seeks to achieve international recognition in her academic, research and other related endeavours. Hence, the University’s internationalisation agenda is appropriately initiated. Although still in its infancy, much has been undertaken to start this journey.
Internationalisation of UniMAP includes having international staff and students in its campus, having its degrees recognised abroad, having students and staff members with good mastery of the English Language, which is the lingua franca of the world, boasting a substantial number of intellectual publications in world renowned journals and the internet, having joint-projects – particularly research projects – with universities and industries outside of Malaysia, getting funding for projects from international sponsors, having academic staff who are celebrated outside of the country, and having the University’s name relatively well known throughout the world.
The goals above are to be realised via various mechanisms – including having programmes such as student exchange, international part-sponsorship schemes for postgraduate research students, and the like. Some efforts will automatically lead to international acknowledgment – for example, recognition by the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council/Board of Engineers will lead to the internationally renowned Washington Accord. Likewise, complying with the ISO 9001:2000 inevitably implies that the University has a quality system that fulfills the minimum requirement of an internationally recognised quality system standard.
Thus far, UniMAP has established collaboration with many universities abroad as well as members of the industry who have international connections. To date, connections have been established with higher learning institutions in USA, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Within the Asian region, links have been made in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, India and China. Collaboration efforts, through MoUs are continually searched and instigated. UniMAP’s location, which is virtually next door to Thailand, opens up many opportunities for regional (especially the IMT-GT) and international collaboration initiatives, not just in the academia, but also in other related fields such as sports and culture.
